A Personalized Approach
What is your approach to teaching reading and writing to neurodiverse learners?
I start with a skill assessment to pinpoint where the gaps and struggles are impacting your child’s ability to succeed. I ensure that lessons target the skills your child needs. In reading, this may look like teaching phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, decoding multi-syllabic words, or reading fluency skills and retention of the words they read. For writing, we may need to focus on forming sentences, grammar, paragraph structure, brainstorming, organizing thoughts, or expanding their thoughts to write more on a topic. I develop individualized lessons at their instructional level with a focused approach to strengthen areas of weakness and capitalize on their strengths. I break concepts into manageable, bite-sized pieces. This ensures your child does not become overwhelmed yet challenges them to reach beyond their own perceived limitations. Often, neurodiverse learners have specific topics they enjoy learning about. I align instruction with their interests to increase their excitement, focus, and willingness to work on the task at hand.
How does online tutoring work?
Tutoring takes place in Koala Go, a video conferencing platform much like Zoom, and it has a few more exciting aspects since it was developed specifically for teaching. It has interactive whiteboards, which are user-friendly and fun for kids. Additionally, the Koala Go platform has a variety of rewards built in that I can utilize to keep your child motivated and focused on the task at hand. During the sessions, your child will receive one-on-one attention as they learn. This intimate learning environment allows immediate feedback and targeted guidance. This helps foster a deeper understanding of reading and writing concepts. I personally assess, adapt, and structure lessons tailored to your child's specific needs, learning style, and pace. This ensures that the tutoring sessions address their unique challenges and enhance their strengths. As they navigate through reading or writing tasks with dedicated support, they gain the assurance needed to tackle future assignments independently.
What ages do you work with?
I work with 4th through 8th grade students, but I have also worked with older and younger students. It all depends on how significant your child's gap is between ability and grade level. Another consideration is how their reading or writing struggles affect their anxiety level, frustration tolerance, or behavior. The key is removing the barriers that stand in the way of their ability to perform the tasks they are given. Don't hesitate to fill out my contact form for the next step toward your child’s success. Next, during a free consultation, we can discuss and craft a plan to address your child’s challenges and struggles with reading and writing tasks. Finally, I will assess your child’s reading and/or writing during the first lesson to determine their skill level.
What are your qualifications? Why should I choose you?
I have a master's degree in special education from the University of Washington and a current teaching certificate in Washington State. For over ten years, I taught in classroom settings and have been tutoring since leaving the classroom in 2015. My classroom teaching experience included working at specialized schools for children with emotional and behavioral needs. In both my classroom work and tutoring, I frequently work with students with ADHD, Autism, and other learning challenges. My unwavering pursuit is to help students find their unique voice in writing, increase their reading abilities, and grow as capable and confident learners.
How much does online tutoring cost?
Many people ask me what I charge for personalized online tutoring lessons tailored to each child's needs. I charge $70 USD for one 45-minute session per week. This includes the time it takes to craft unique, student-specific lessons that engage individual learners where they are in their journey to become confident readers and writers. For shorter or longer lessons, I adjust the rate accordingly.
How long will my child need tutoring?
How long tutoring lasts varies greatly for each child, and your child is no different. Learning is individualized, and each child has their own pace for learning new concepts and building confidence. It depends on various factors, from how significantly they struggle to how wide a gap exists between their grade level and current abilities. I have worked with some students for only ten sessions, others until they reach grade level, and even some year-round as they need further support to succeed. I will work with you and your child, continually assessing their needs and progress, and then plan their personalized lessons accordingly.
